Ottawa/Gatineau Hidden Treasures

Our challenge for the month of August is to Get Outdoors and Play! Fresh air and physical activity are correlated to increased health and joy. And lucky for us, Ottawa/Gatineau has been transformed this summer to an oasis of outdoor activities that are family-friendly, adventurous, and often free!

I challenge you to explore some of these Hidden Treasures!

MosaiCanada 150

These amazing sculptures are a part of the biggest horticultural event in Canada! Located in Jacques-Cartier Park, the exhibit reflects the history and culture of Canada. Spend a few hours getting lost in the past!

Morrison’s Quarry

Head to Wakefield, QC, to find the clearest water and most picture-worthy destination. It’s $5 per person. Spend the day swimming and relaxing!

Eagle’s Nest Lookout

Only an hour away at Calabogie Peaks Resort, this hike will transport you directly into the Lion King. You will feel like Simba when you reach the top and survey the beautiful forest below! The hike is 8 km, so a moderate-difficult level, but absolutely worth the effort.

Major’s Hill Park

kick back in the city among the hustle and bustle. Take a walk during your lunch break or enjoy a leisurely bike ride with the family through Ottawa’s favourite park.

Gatineau Park

Not much of a “hidden” treasure, but this is an obvious choice for our favourites list! So many trails, so little time! Crowd favourites are Pink Lake and Mackenzie King Estate! Make sure to check the park guide for difficulty levels and trail closures.

Rideau_Canal.jpg

Rideau Canal

rent a paddleboat or go for a stroll along the scenic paths of the Rideau Canal! Rentals are at Dow’s Lake pavilion. The Rideau Canal is a great way to de-stress after work or on a lively Saturday morning.

Mooney’s Bay

Grab a volleyball and head to the peaceful beaches of Mooney’s Bay. While the water isn’t the most appealing, the sand and atmosphere draws fun crowds for sports and picnics. Don’t forget to check out the new Canada150-themed playground designed by kids!

Kontinuum.jpg

Kontinuum

In the LRT tunnels, this free light show is mind-boggling! Walk through different displays of light-frequencies based on energy from the tunnels! Only around until September 14!

The Experimental Farm

Your children will be amused for days with the many offerings at the farm! Each day of the summer there are different exhibitions and group activities to join! Check out the museum, explore the walkways, and learn more about what makes Ottawa tick.

Mud Lake

This leisurely stroll at the Britannia Conservation hosts a wide array of birds, critters and plants for the inquisitive mind. Great for entertaining children and breathing fresh air close to the city!

Lusk Cave

Hidden within Gatineau Park, this gem starts with a gentle hike leading to a truly hidden world! Walk through the caves with a flashlight and discover the secrets of creatures like frogs, bats, and even beavers.

Outdoor Yoga on Parliament Hill

Wednesday lunches are a great time to de-stress and find your zen! Only during the summer, this hour-long activity is super popular for Ottawans.
