Something I get asked all the time is "Do you think acupuncture can help with that?" Of course the answer varies but perhaps a bit of background on acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) will help! Acupuncture is a form of medicine that has been used for generations as a treatment for many types of illness and symptoms. Many people have tried it acutely for sore and tight muscles to help them to relax, but acupuncture has many more functions and impacts than just that. It is a staple in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a form of medicine based on the balance of energies in the body. In Chinese medicine it is said that the body is made up of life force energy known as Qi. Having the right amount and the proper flow of Qi through the body gives us the energy to keep all of our organ systems functioning properly throughout the day. There are many things that can deplete our Qi or can disrupt the flow of Qi through the body. This includes stress, lack of sleep, over exercise, illness, emotions, trauma etc. When our Qi gets depleted or the flow is disrupted our organ systems are not able to function as well as they should be and this can lead to a variety of different symptoms.
It is the flow of Qi through the body as well as the balance of yin and yang that help keep the body feeling well. Yin and yang are two opposing forces that make up the body. Yin is grounding energy. It is our substance. Yang on the other hand is moving energy. Where yin is our substance, yang is the energy that allows us to use that substance. Yin supports yang and yang supports yin. We need each of them to be able to function optimally on a daily basis.
When there is a disruption in the flow of Qi through the body or an imbalance between yin and yang, symptoms and illness arise. Acupuncture is one way to manipulate the energies in the body. It can help to bring these 3 energies back into balance to promote the smooth flow of energy in the body.
How does Acupuncture Work
Acupuncture involves inserting small needles into specific areas of the body in order to support the flow of various forms of energy in the body. There are 100s of acupuncture points over the entire body each one with a specific function. In acupuncture treatment each point used is chosen based on the impact that it will have to support the dysfunction or imbalance that is happening in the body. As each imbalance between these 3 forces can cause different symptoms acupuncture can hep support a multitude of different conditions.
