You have probably just seen our video on Home Made Tortillas and Tortilla Press. Here are all the details on the type of flour to buy and how to make your own tortilla press. The tortilla press is super simple and can be made with a couple straps, some old plywood scraps and a few screws.

This is what you will end up with and here are the plans as we built it:

That's it! You will need 2 pieces roughly 8x8, and three pieces roughly 2x8 , a couple old hinges or some nylon webbing like an old backpack strap/carseat strap or webbing similar to an old belt or seatbelt.

Assemble it like this(We put some felt pads on it too.

Time to make your tortilla dough!

Here is the corn flour we got from the grocery store.

it is the easiest thing mix according to the directions on the back and form into 1" balls ready to be squashed in your tortilla press.

You don't actually need a tortilla press

If you didn't have time to make the tortilla press, you can really use 2 thicker cutting boards to squash the dough balls.

The real trick is to line your tortilla press (or cutting boards) with a sandwich bag before you press. Cut the top and sides off a plastic Ziplock sandwich bag.

this is perfect for placing your dough ball into the center so it presses evenly.

Now time to Cook

Pre-heat a cast iron pan to smoking hot! and lay the freshly pressed corn flour tortilla in the dry pan. 30 seconds do not touch it then flip it over for another 30 seconds. That should be it! you can then stack the cooked tortilla on a plate and cover with a bowl, keep stacking until all the dough balls are cooked.

Pro Tip: press the tortillas immediately after pressing and don't let the dough balls dry out before you press them!

Fill your beautiful fresh tortillas with your favorite filling, guacamole, refried beans, pico de gaillo, salsa, squeeze of lime and some hot sauce. A nice touch is some fresh crisp raw shredded cabbage on top for a bit of crunch.

Enjoy!
