Making an Ergonomic-Friendly Workspace while Working from Home

More and more people in Ottawa have chosen to work from home. However, we often see these people at our clinic suffering from pain or discomfort due to their work ergonomics. Choosing to work from the sofa or kitchen table instead of a posture-friendly desk or workstation may lead to painful injuries. As comfortable as your current work area may be, it’s crucial to create an ergonomic-friendly workspace to help reduce the risk of injuries and musculoskeletal disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis. Here are a few tips from our team at Arc of Life Chiropractic to create an ergonomic workspace while working from home.

Seating

Forego the dining table chair or the sofa and instead opt for a good chair. The chair should be sturdy, fit your body, and the height should allow you to rest your feet flat on the floor. If you don’t have a good office chair, consider adding a pillow to a standard chair to help with back and leg support.

Working Height

Working over a laptop can lead to shoulder, neck, and back strain. The ideal solution is to use a laptop stand to prop up the screen. When looking at the screen, be sure your eyes are level with the address bar at the top of the browser screen. To help with wrist alignment and reduce the risk of carpal tunnel, make sure you are working at a height that allows your elbows to naturally lay flush with the height of the desk.

Chiropractic Care

Along with using the appropriate ergonomic equipment for your workspace, seeking chiropractic care can also be beneficial for reducing the strains and pains that your body may endure while you work from home. Our chiropractors provide hands-on adjustments and massage therapy to help keep muscles loose, reducing the risk of muscle strains and pain. Our chiropractors can also offer recommendations for a more ergonomic workstation. Don’t forget to take breaks while working, so you can get up and walk around and remember to stay hydrated.
